I also really like how each of the stories wrestles with the theme that is so familiar from Kim Deitch's other work of blending fiction and non-fiction in a way that leaves the reader feeling like the story might really be true, despite involving a lot of fantastical elements. The good news is that despite one or two duds, it's mostly a good read! This isn't really a comic book like Kim Deitch's other stuff, this is mostly prose with Kim or his brother Simon illustrating the text with a picture on every other page. Jan 30, Ero rated it liked it Shelves: The book leads off with Kim's lengthy picto-story "The Sunshine Girl," a typically Deitchean tall tale involving bottle cap collectors, drug dealers, family secrets, and the innocents who wind up in the middle of the hullaballoo. Kim's stuff is the best as you would imagine - his Sunshine Girl story of bottle cap collecting maniacs and acid casualties is good fun and gets the book off to a good start. Kim's art isn't exactly amazing either, but it's distinct and lively, and he uses the illustrations in interesting ways to interact with the text and make the prose writing more comic book in its presentation, occasionally putting dialogue in a word balloon coming from a drawing, or inserting part of a sentence in an explosion to enforce the impact of the moment. Pictorama only sells time- and GPS-tagged pictures — a feature that helps buyers to look for local and seasonal pictures.

Consequently some of it is brilliant madness, and some of it is only wierdly entertaining, and some of it is only so-so.

This book is not yet featured on Listopia. Paperbackpages. I'd recommend to readers "Smilin' Ed" or "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" if you can get your hands on a copy.

I didn't care for Simon's archetypal Golem tale, but the other stories in the book MORE than made up for the one storie's inadequacies.
